The law encourages innovation, invention and creativity by allowing people to protect the results of their efforts through a collection of rights known as intellectual property.
There are various different types of intellectual property right and they are used to protect different things. The most common intellectual property rights are:
In many cases, the owner of the intellectual property has the exclusive right to commercialise and generate income from these rights, either by selling it or licensing it.
At Grid Law, we can provide advice and information on the protection of all types of intellectual property. We can also help prepare licensing agreements to ensure that you achieve the maximum amount of royalties possible.
A handy tip! If you have an idea, you must keep it confidential until it is protected. If you do not, you could loose the right to protect it or someone else could just take it. If need to discuss your idea with someone, enter into a confidentiality or non-disclosure agreement first.
You should also write you idea down in as much detail as possible and post it to yourself by recorded delivery. Don’t open the letter but keep it safe as this will be valuable evidence of the date on which you came up with the invention.
If your intellectual property rights are infringed, for example through copying or the production of counterfeit goods, Grid Law can provide advice on what rights and remedies are available to protect your position and in some cases recover compensation.
